the Joka-Esplanade Metro corridor is one of the slowest ongoing metro works in the city. With immense land acquisition problems and lack of funds it has become a mere lost hope project of the city. Stations are almost ready the viaduct is ready but the trains cannot operate. The track-laying works were recently started and RVNL the implementing agency floated a tender to construct the joka Depot. Yes in this grim time this news comes as a joy for South Kolkata because Joka Depot was the last remaining hurdle of his line.  The Joka Depot was facing extreme land acquisition problems since 2010. No Metro rail services in Kolkata till March 31, 2020 The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd said on Sunday it would suspend its services till March 31 as a precautionary measure to avoid any Covid-19 outbreak, even as the Indian Railways announced it will not run any of its passenger trains in the country till the end of this month. "From tomorrow (Monday) till 24 hours (midnight) of March 31, 2020, there will be no Metro services," tweeted Kolkata Metro. The Kolkata Metro is one of the city's lifelines carrying about 630,000 passengers daily. Nonetheless, the footfall went down after people started remaining indoors and avoiding public transportation. On March 16, Metro passenger numbers fell to around 520,000.
